FRISCO, Texas — Two late second-half goals for FC Dallas gave the club a 2-0 win over a short-handed Real Salt Lake side on Saturday night in the Lone Star State, where RSL has never recorded a victory.
With five players currently on international duty — defenders Tony Beltran and Abdoulie Mansally, midfielder Kyle Beckerman, forward Alvaro Saborio and goalkeeper Nick Rimando — and six players listed as injured, RSL head coach Jason Kreis had no choice but to use a roster on the pitch that not only included young and new players, but young and new players that don't fully know RSL's system.
FC Dallas midfielders Fabian Castillo and Jackson put the goals in the back of the net for the Dallas club in the 70th and 81st minutes, respectively. The loss drops RSL to 1-2-1 on the 2013 season with four points in its first four matches.
RSL defender Lovel Palmer, midfielder Cole Grossman, forward Joao Plata and goalkeeper Josh Saunders each received their first starts for the Salt Lake club Saturday night — Grossman and Saunders also notching their first minutes for the Claret and Cobalt.
RSL defender Nat Borchers saw his first minutes and start of this season after recovering from a knee injury and surgery performed in the offseason. RSL forward Olmes Garcia also saw his first minutes in the RSL uniform, entering the match for Grossman in the 77th minute.
The Salt Lake club will face FC Dallas two more times this season, July 13 and Oct. 5, the next match back in Dallas and the third meeting between the two at home inside Rio Tinto Stadium.
RSL midfielder Yordany Alvarez, who received his first start this season, was shown two yellow cards in the match for a foul and a dive in the 37th and 83rd minute, and was ejected from the match, leaving the Claret and Cobalt with only 10 players for the final minutes. The ejection hands him a one-game suspension.
RSL will return to Utah to begin preparations for next weekend as it hosts MLS Western Conference opponent Seattle at home March 30. The five players on international duty are expected to return to the Claret and Cobalt and be available for the match.
