The organization opened its new Salt Lake City warehouse space Thursday morning. The building, located at 1726 S. 700 West, will give volunteers more room and includes a new produce cooler.

"Our new warehouse space was the result of years of planning and effort by many people, so we'd like to thank them," Community Food Co-op Assistant Director Trever Bruhn said in a news release.

The nonprofit organization collects orders from community members for food, which gives them the buying power to get more food at affordable prices. It's a project of Crossroads Urban Center, which has fought the root causes of poverty since 1966.

Currently the Community Food Co-Op serves about 2,200 people each month, but officials hope to increase that number to 3,000 for 2011.
