Five players scored in double figures and Weber State shot 60 percent from the field as the Wildcats rolled to an 85-64 win at Northern Colorado. WSU improves to 15-5 overall and 10-2 in Big Sky play with the victory, the final game of a four-game road trip.
After two free throws by Northern Colorado to take a 2-0 lead the Wildcats took over and went on an 8-0 run and led 10-2 with 15:00 to play. They would never trail again. Northern Colorado missed its first 11 shots from the field and the Wildcats led by 20 points, 45-25 at halftime. Weber State shot 62 percent from the field in the first half, compared to just 32 percent for the Bears.
The ‘Cats continued their strong play in the second half and jumped out to a 30-point lead at 62-32 with 14:12 to play. They led by as many as 32 points in the second half in route to the win. They beat Northern Colorado by an average of 23 points in the two games this season.
Weber State finished the game shooting 60.8 percent from the field, their best percentage against a Division I team this season, and held Northern Colorado to 38 percent shooting. WSU also outrebounded the Bears 35-27. They were 8-17 from three-point range and were 15-18 from the free throw line.
"Our whole team was really dialed in and ready to compete tonight," said Weber State head coach Randy Rahe. "We had a great focus, especially in the first half. We really set the tone with our defense and rebounding early on. Our whole team was involved on both ends of the floor. We had lots of players really step up and play well. We had the lead and then we pushed it to even a higher level."
Individually Scott Bamforth led the Wildcats with 20 points on 6-9 shooting, including 4-7 from three-point range. Frank Otis added 15 points and was a perfect 6-6 from the field. Kyle Tresnak had 12 points and seven rebounds and Davion Berry posted 12. Gelaun Wheelwright chipped in with 10 points off the bench and Joel Bolomboy had seven points and eight rebounds.
"We came out and played really hard tonight and it was good to finish our road trip strong," Bamforth said. "We played really good defense tonight and fought hard all night."
Weber State has now won 10 Big Sky games in each of the past seven years under coach Rahe. WSU has played eight of its first 12 games on the road and will now play six of the final eight conference games at home. They will start a four-game homestand next Saturday hosting Southern Utah.
