Whether you call them, Eel Pout, Lawyer, Ling, Mudblow or Poor Man's Lobster. The burbot is classified as one thing in the Green River Drainage and that is an invasive species. Burbot were first discovered in Flaming Gorge in 2006 when biologists found a few in their nets. Now the population has exploded and burbot are starting to have an effect on the other, more desirable species in Flaming Gorge Reservoir.
In response to this threat, communities near Flaming Gorge have joined to promote the third annual Burbot Bash - a two day fishing derby to be held February 1st thru 3rd. Registration is from 3-5pm on February 1st at the Buckboard Marina. Teams of up to 4 anglers can compete for up to $20,000 in cash and prizes.
The derby will conclude with a prize award ceremony featuring a burbot fish fry on Sunday, February 3rd at the Manila Rodeo Grounds. For more information on the Burbot or the bash, check out our Calendar page on our Outdoors site at KSLTV.com
