Apr. 27--Fabric is the focus of two new exhibits at the Yeiser Art Center, 200 Broadway.
"Fine Focus 2006" features 54 small-format art quilts from artists across the United States, Germany, Belgium and Canada. All quilts had to measure 16-by-16-inches or under. Some are highly embellished with beads and intricate thread work. Some carry political messages; others simply are unusual such as one made from tea bags.
"They each tell their own little story," Yeiser executive director Robin Taffler said. "I think in some ways with big quilts, you're drawn in because of their size. With the little quilts, you're drawn in a completely different way. You're drawn in for the story. These feel literary to me."
"Fine Focus" is a traveling juried exhibition. Quilts in the collection are for sale, with prices ranging from $150 to $800.
The center of the gallery features "For What It's Worth -- New Work by William H. Thielen." He assembled the large-scale sculptures from humble materials such as yarn, tulle and pipe cleaners. One piece resembles Big Bird, but its title is "Too Much of a Good Thing." Taffler laughed that "Light and Fluffy," a giant pink circular piece, reminded her of Princess Leia's hairdo from the "Star Wars" movies.
"I love them because they're poking fun at sculpture," Taffler said. "People traditionally think of sculpture as steel or metal. You come into the gallery and go, 'What are these?'"
Thielen's exhibit also includes paintings and drawings.
Opening receptions for both exhibits will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. The exhibits will be on display until May 27.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free, but the suggested donation is $3.
