You know, I'm thinking that it must have been a pretty hungry individual who bashed open the first crab and ate it. But I'm sure glad he or she did. Because fresh crab ranks right up at the top of my list of scrumptious foods - I like it even better than lobster.
Well if you're a crab connoisseur like me, this will serve as a reminder that the Market Street Grill, Market Street Broiler, Oyster Bar and Fish Markets are right in the middle of their annual crab festival, which runs at those restaurants and markets through the end of February.
Chef Scott Loring - who's also Market Street's Crab King - says that "In addition to Oregon Dungeness, they also have superb Alaska King Crab, snow crab, rock crab, and lump crab, all being served in more than two dozen delectably different ways." For example, through the end of the month Market Streets Crab Festival will showcase dishes like crab cakes, crab cocktails, artichoke-crab dip, crab Louie salad, and Oscar-style Halibut with Crab. Of course they'll also be serving mountains of whole Dungeness crab and Alaska crab legs - steamed or cold - for people like me who want their crab straight from the shell, with just a drizzle of butter.
Hey, and while you're enjoying kilo's of crab at Market Street, you should also check out the new seashell mural there. It was created by Utah artists Ben Behunin and Brett Clark and is made from more than 1,000 pounds of seashells and sea glass. As for me, I'll be knee deep in my own crab shells!
