Frequent listeners of Sound Bites know that I'm mad about Mexican food. Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of the time the best Mexican restaurants are tucked away and hard to find. So I owe a debt of gratitude this week to a couple of KSL listeners named Jim and Mary Ann, displaced Texans now living in Utah. Jim and Mary Ann suggested I check out the Tamale Kitchen, which is located in the Ivy Place shopping center on 3300 South. And boy am I glad I did. Because the Tamale Kitchen serves up not only great tamales but really good Mexican fare all around.

The Tamale Kitchen is run by a couple of sisters originally from New Mexico: Dixie and Marcella. Well they do everything at the restaurant, from making scrumptious tamales from scratch to waiting on customers. According to Dixie, they average about 50 dozen tamales each week at the Tamale Kitchen, or more than 100 a day.

And the homemade tamales at the Tamale Kitchen are some of the best I've ever tasted. But the place isn't about just tamales. For example, the carne adovada is thin sliced pork bathed in a zippy New Mexico style red chile sauce and it's out of this world. I also really enjoyed the open face enchiladas and the burritos with red or green chile. Oh, and the combination plates at the Tamale Kitchen - which only run about five to seven bucks - all include a sopaipilla with honey.

That's the Tamale Kitchen in Ivy Place, where you can enjoy chile today and hot tamales.
