SALT LAKE CITY — Grinnell College (Division III) whipped Faith Baptist Bible College 179-104 Tuesday night in Iowa. Grinnell's 5-foot-10, 170 lb. gunner, chucker, hoister set a new NCAA record, pouring in 138 pts in the 75 pt blowout.
I was more than a little peeved about the celebrity he's getting for piling on a defenseless team that didn't even seem to care.
So I started to tweet about it. @tksportsbeat was cookin'.
By the time I'd finished there were several observations, criticisms and possible solutions were I playing (or coaching) against him last night.
16 tweets, most using every one of the 140 characters. So here they are, strung together:
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:Am I the only one wondering what Grinnell's coach is thinking. WIn a game by 75 pts, let 1 kid take 108 shots? 71 of 'em 3's?
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:#Goesaroundcomesaround What shooter doesn't covet the 'green light' but what did it prove? Just made Jack Taylor a marked man on the road!
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:This raises an interesting question. We all know what J-Slo would've done if he was on the floor, defending against a team mocking the game
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:How would you have defended if you were getting lit up like that, down 60 or 70 pts. This kid's firing up 3's? I would've used all my fouls
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:Including exhibitions, Faith Baptist Bible College is 0-7, losing by avg of 38 pts a game. Grinnell's a decent Divison III program.
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:The NCAA's new single-game pts record holder, Jack Taylor (138 vs Faith) played 36 (of 40) minutes, next closest teammate-14 mins
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:Taylor 'Jacked' 108 shots (made52) next closest teammate took six (6) shots. Fav stat, 138 pts, 0 (zero) assists, 7 turnovers.
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:Solutions. If you're defending this kid making a mockery of your team and the game of BKB. Why not double him, ferociously trap the kid
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:I call on my friend. Sagacious, learned, esteemed BKB mind @gchiesaohmy Coach what do you do if you see this going on against your team?
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:SInce "Jack(ing 'em up) Taylor's production was preposterously prodigious, video game-esque. I ask StarCraft disciple @gordonhayward...
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:What would you do @gordonhayward? Just let the kid gun away? He's hunting points for purely selfish reasons. OR help him out.
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:Turn it into a total mockery. Have all my kids feed him from the 3 pt line. Don't rebound except to pass it back to him, When he hits...
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:Quickly turn it right back over to him. To maximize efficiency get my best passers in the game. Hit Jack(itup) in perfect shooting position!
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:Wonder how many shots, 3's Taylor could Jack up if we "assisted" him? THAT record would never be broken and we would've made our point!
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:How would the kid and coach feel several minutes into that kind of insanity? Embarrassed maybe? OK To quote Brady Quinn "now I'm done!"
- Tom Kirkland @tksportsbeat:Oh wait I seek input from 1 more baller @mharpring15 What say you? (I think I know where this is going, LOVE it!) What do we do with Jack? THERE NOW, I FEEL MUCH BETTER! I CAN GO TO SLEEP AND NOT DREAM OF FLYING FLAGRANT FOULS!
