PARK CITY, Utah (AP) -- Salt Lake City native Zach Lund edged fellow American Eric Bernotas to win the skeleton event Thursday on the first day of the FIBT Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Cup.
Lund finished with a time of 1:38.41, beating Bernotas by .25 seconds.
"I am pleased when America can get a couple people on the podium," Bernotas said. "Zach, Caleb (Smith) and I pushed each other all week."
Lund has won the event in Park City two straight years and even with Thursday's snow he was able to get to 82.5 miles per hour.
"I was a little worried that the conditions might throw things off but I had something to prove and I felt like it was mine to defend," Lund said.
England's Anthony Sawyer (1:38.70) and Kristan Bromley (1:38.96) finished in third and fourth, respectively.
Earlier in the day, Canada's Michelle Kelly won the women's event with a time of 1:40.43 while posting a top speed of 81.6 mph in her second heat.
Three Americans finished in the top 10 as Katie Uhlaender finished second at 1:41.09. Courtney Yamada was seventh at 1:41.81, and Annie O'Shea was 10th with a time of 1:42.21.
