One of the strongholds of the BYU defense has taken an additional hit with the news that senior safety Joe Sampson has been suspended for an unspecified violation of team rules and has withdrawn from school, as announced on Thursday by head football coach Bronco Mendenhall.

Sophomore linebacker Zac Stout was also suspended for a violation of team rules and has likewise withdrawn from school.

The BYU press release on the suspensions is as follows:

--

PROVO, Utah (Nov. 8, 2012) — BYU head football coach Bronco Mendenhall today announced senior defensive back Joe Sampson and sophomore linebacker Zac Stout have been suspended from the team for violation of team rules. Both players have withdrawn from school and will not return this season.

Sampson started in eight of nine games this year at free safety with 33 tackles to give him 56 career stops in his two seasons at BYU. Stout appeared in one game at inside linebacker in 2012 with one tackle. He made 21 tackles in 10 games as a true freshman in 2010 before missing the 2011 season due to injury.

The departure of Sampson (No. 1, pictured above), means another loss for a BYU safety corps that is already missing senior Mike Hague, out for the season with a calf injury.

Sopomore Kat/Free safety Craig Bills will now take Sampson's starting spot at FS for the remaining four games--three regular season contests and a bowl game.

BYU's new-look defensive secondary will take to the field Saturday night home to Idaho; the game kicks at 8:15pm, with pregame coverage underway at 6:00pm on KSL Newsradio.
