This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
Funny how dreams start early … and grab so tight they never let go... Take the story of Jon Fondell of Fondell Woodwork.
As a teenager, Jon knew his future would be either as a carpenter or a chef. .... So, during the day he'd work on building projects ... At night, he'd cook ... He loved both, so he did what anyone in his situation would do. He went to someone he trusted and asked to borrow a quarter .... He flipped it and carpentry won out ... A life-changing fall later switched his focus from construction to woodworking.
So Jon started his company in his basement until it grew big enough to move to a larger space — his garage. From there, it was smaller rental spaces until finally, they built their current location on State Street in Lehi.
As the name suggests, Fondell Woodwork specializes in woodwork. They're proud of their work and invite you to see it in many different places throughout Utah, including the common areas at St. Regis Resort in Deer Valley, the Adobe Facility in Orem and Xango at Thanksgiving Point .... In Idaho, you'll recognize their distinctive style on the outdoor Sun Valley Music Pavilion.
Fondell Woodwork now has 42 employees, many of them long-term contributors. For example, Jon's head engineer has been with the company for almost 25 years ... and that's just part of a dedicated group that has grown with the company. It's built like a family, even if none of Jon's biological family is involved.
At Fondell Woodwork, they're known for remodeling projects, hotel retrofits, commercial architecture, retail and some religious work for the LDS Church .... In the last few years, Fondell Woodwork has focused on lean manufacturing — a management and production philosophy based on continuous improvement and change.
Today, Fondell Woodwork is working on increasing their footprint, getting the word out about what they do and how well they do it .... They'll continue to be a presence in woodworking, wherever people want a distinctive look.
