There were 49 high school football games played in Utah last week and only seven of them were decided by less than 7 points.
The lack of upsets led to very little change in the latest KSL Coaches Poll.
Before the season started very few thought this game would have as much meaning as it will have. Neither team was ranked to begin the season but after 6 weeks both teams have perfect records and are ranked in the top five. There is a very good chance that the winner of this game will end up as Region 1 champions. When you consider that a Region 1 team has reached the state championship game in 4 of the last 5 seasons that is significant.No. 4 Bingham at Lone Peak
Last year the Knights went to South Jordan and beat up the Miners on their home field. The win was a huge confidence builder for Lone Peak which went on to win the state championship. Now Bingham hopes to return the favor on their home field. Several starters are back from last year's team and they surely remember.Orem at No. 2 Timpview
The Thunderbirds continue to roll under new head coach Cary Whittingham. They are 3 feet away from being undefeated and haven't lost a region game since 2005. The Orem Tigers may be the only team left in Region 8 that have any chance of ending that streak this year.Desert Hills at No. 4 Stansbury
These two teams met in the 3A state quarterfinals last year. The Thunder made the long trip to Stansbury and crushed the Stallions on their way to the state championship game. Stansbury will not only be looking for revenge but looking to prove they can beat a Region 9 team. Xfinity Challenge 2pm and 7pm Sat. at Rio Tinto Stadium
How do programs in Utah stack up against a couple national powerhouses? You can find out Saturday when Rio Tinto Stadium is host to the Xfinity Challenge. Jordan will face St. John Bosco out of Bellflower California at 2pm while Alta will take on Don Bosco from New Jersey at 7. Both out of state opponents are nationally ranked.
The 5A poll remains unchanged with Jordan at No. 1 followed by Syracuse, Alta, Bingham and Northridge.
Alta pulled away late to survive an upset bid from Brighton. Now the Hawks prepare for a much more difficult challenge when they face national powerhouse Don Bosco from New Jersey in the Xfinity challenge at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Jordan will also be a part of the Xfinity challenge as they will take on St. John Bosco from Bellflower California, also a nationally ranked program. It will be interesting to see how the Utah teams stack up against their out of town foes.
Syracuse and Northridge will meet this Friday in a much anticipated Region 1 battle between ranked teams.
4A is still led by East who continues to dominate their competition. The Leopards had no trouble with Cleafield 47-0.
Timpview is No. 2 after an impressive win over undefeated Timpanogos 38-13.
Logan had a scare from a much improved Roy team but survived 30-23.
Bountiful is No. 4 after a big overtime win over Highland and Woods Cross is back in the top five after crushing Cyprus 54-7.
Hurricane has now won 19 consecutive games and look to be in the drivers seat in a very competitive Region 9.
Also impressive is Juan Diego who is quietly enjoying another perfect start to the season at 6-0. Dixie held off a great challenge from Desert Hills to remain at No. 3 while Stansbury holds on to the No. 4 spot after surviving an overtime scare at Morgan.
Spanish Fork is No. 5 as they started region play with a 56-0 win over Carbon.
San Juan is still No. 1 in 2A while Manti held on to the No. 2 spot after a very impressive road win at No. 3 South Summit.
Millard is still No. 4 after a very impressive 20 point win at Emery.
Beaver makes their season debut in the poll at No. 5. They have outscored their last two opponents by a combined score of 111-7.
Duchesne continues to roll through their schedule and have now moved into 4th place in Utah history with 27 consecutive wins. They have not lost a game since Sept. 3, 2010. A win Friday against Summit Academy will tie them with Rich for the 3rd longest win streak in state history.
They are followed in the poll by Monticello, Rich, Summit Academy and Layton Christian.
