Some of us are still thinking about what to do over Labor Day weekend, especially if we don't want to pack up and head out of town. Here's an idea: how about attending the Soldier Hollow Classic in the beautiful Heber Valley.
This is the 10th anniversary for this Utah classic, which attracts participants from all over the world. Over the years it's moved into the distinction of being an invitational. So, the shepherd with their Border Collie has to qualify somewhere else to be invited to the Soldier Hollow Classic in Heber Valley, Utah. This means you'll see international folks participate from as far away as Brazil, Canada and South Africa.
If you think about our Utah ancestry, especially in the Heber region of Utah, running sheep is a long-standing tradition. The connection between the shepherd and his dogs is crucial as they maneuver for long distances over rugged territory. It's quite a sight to sit in the beautiful Soldier Hollow which has its own history, most recently of hosting Olympic events, and watch some of the toughest sheep, accomplished sheep herders and best Border Collies in the world run the course.
The inspiration for this event hit founder Mark Petersen when he was in Scotland 15 years ago. He witnessed a sheep herding/Border Collie contest and thought the folks in Utah would appreciate it.
Of course Mark has added some other fun events besides watching the Border Collies and sheep. Kids will love the Dazzle Dogs Canine Acrobats, Wild Wonders Animal Show and the high flying Splash Dogs Championship. You can also try great food representing the shepherding cultures of the world and enjoy traditional Scottish music performed throughout the event.
Once again Utah has something else to brag about thanks to the Soldier Hollow Classic. In fact, it's grabbed the attention of film producers who are creating a documentary that goes behind the scenes to show us what it takes to be a shepherd and the special relationship they have with their dogs. Filmmaking is one of our state's top exports.
