This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
We're at that time of year when many people feel the need to get away. How about visiting the Bumbleberry Inn in Springdale, Utah at the mouth of Zion National Park?
This is a luxury hotel experience with 48 rooms on 15 acres with flowers, ducks, ponies and a live theatre that seats 170 people, right on the property. The spacious rooms boast views of the spectacular Southern Utah scenery and are within walking distance of shops, restaurants and entertainment in Springdale.
Howard Smith and his brother ventured in to the Bumbleberry Inn to have lunch in 1972, and Howard bought the place a week later. He moved his family to Springdale because he wanted them to have the experience of growing up in a small town.
In meeting with Howard's son, Stan, the current owner, I could see this is another great Utah family business. Stan has grown up in the hotel and guest service business and has done just about every job you can imagine. The Bumbleberry Inn is known for their famous pies, and they currently bake up to 75 pies every day, selling them from the inn's gift shop. The recipe has been a family secret now for over 40 years.
One of the many benefits Springdale has to offer, besides all the wonderful mom and pop restaurants and the 700 hotel rooms, is the central location to some of Utah's most beautiful destinations like Bryce Canyon, Cedar Breaks National Monument and Lake Powell. Of course Zion National Park is right there. You can hike up to Angel's Landing or repel down the slot canyons.
As Utah continues the trend of a growing film industry — it's currently one of the top exports — the Washington area has been important. Well-known films like "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" were produced here. Looking around at the scenery, it's easy to see why.
Do yourself a favor and head down to Springdale so you can book a room at the Bumbleberry Inn and get a pie to munch on during your visit.
