The smoky air of uncertainty surrounds BYU's scheduled football game at San Diego State Saturday night. The fires in Southern California prompted cancellation of Monday classes at SDSU, while many members of the Aztecs' football staff evacuated their homes during the day. SDSU says plans are to hold the game as scheduled at Qualcomm Stadium--a facility currently being used as an evacuation center. A school officials says the University "has every intention" of playing the game at Qualcomm, and that "hopefully, by Saturday, things will be relatively back to normal."

BYU LB Markell Staffieri's family had evacuated their home in Del Mar as of Monday afternoon.

The Aztecs' regularly-scheduled Tuesday press conference has been cancelled, and the team may end up moving its practices this week to avoid unhealthy air conditions. The San Diego Chargers, meantime, are moving their practices to Arizona. The Chargers have a game scheduled for Qualcomm on Sunday.

BYU and the Mountain West Conference continue to monitor the fire situation--BYU says we should know the status of the game by Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning at the latest.

BYU head hoops coach Dave Rose has been rewarded with a new 4-year contract--something I was told by sources would follow the finalization of Bronco Mendenhall's new deal. BYU's recent private endowment efforts were aimed primarily at funding the retention of BYU's two high-revenue sport coaches at salaries that would make "poaching" those coaches less likely.
