SALT LAKE CITY - Mike Trout snapped a 2-2 tie with a two-run triple in the fourth inning to help send the Bees to a 5-4 win over the Tucson Padres in Salt Lake's home opener.
With one out in the fourth, Efren Navarro and Ed Lucas delivered singles to put runners at first and second when Trout drove a 2-2 pitch from Tucson starter Jorge Reyes into the left center field gap, driving home the two runners. Salt Lake led 5-2 in the eighth when James Darnell hit a two-run homer to bring the Padres to within one, but Kevin Johnson retired the next three hitters and Ryan Brasier tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save of the season.
"A lot of people came out to see us and it was a great win. When we get the win more fans will come, if we lose by 10 not a lot of people are going to want to see us," said Bees centerfielder Mike Trout.
Loek Van Mil (1-0) worked two scoreless innings to earn the victory. Navarro and Lucas each had three hits to lead the Bees, while Andrew Romine added a pair of singles, as Salt Lake wins its home opener for the second consecutive year.
"It's huge because last year we struggled in those situations in front of big crowds and we would get behind by a lot early then try to work our way out of it. It was a tough year in that respect and for us to win the opening game for the third straight series is huge. Also, another one-run ballgame shows something of the intestinal fortitude to put games away," said Bees manager Keith Johnson.
