This is Marty Carpenter of the Salt Lake Chamber with your Utah Business Report.
Yet another hint that Utah's economy is improving—the Beehive State once again leads the U.S. in merchandise export growth—up 39.5 percent growth from 2010 to 2011.
When PresidentBarack Obama set a goal to double U.S. exports by in five years, Utah had already done just that over the previous five years. Since2010, we're on our way to doubling our total again. In 2010, we set a state record with 13.8 billion dollars in merchandise exports. That number rose to an impressive 18.93 billion dollars last year. There's been an overall 142.3 percent growth from Utah merchandise exports in just the past five years.
Moving forward, Utah businesses have another big advantage when it comes to exports: the World Bank. The Salt Lake Chamber is a private sector liason that helps businesses secure contracts on projects funded by the World Bank. The World Bank works with the individual governments of countries seeking assistance to decide on a course of action for improvement projects. Then World Bank calls on resources and companies of sponsors to contribute to the cause—including those in the U.S. This is where our exports get a big boost.
More Utah exports mean more Utah jobs. And that's good for everyone. This is Marty Carpenter for KSL News Radio.
