Berlin (dpa) - The Deutsche Oper Berlin, one of the German capital's three opera houses, announced Monday the appointment of German-born Christoph Seuferle as its new operatic director.
Seuferle, who currently heads the opera house in Montpellier in France, will take over in Berlin from retiring Jean-Francois Monnard at the start of the 2007/2008 season. The German was previously a director at the Opera National which runs the two main Paris houses.
The Deutsche Oper, which is also a ballet house, praised him Monday for his experience at organizing international co-productions, a method that reduces the costs of putting on opera while maintaining high standards.
