New York (dpa) - A painting by Joseph Mallord William Turner, who lived from 1775 to 1851, has been auctioned for 30 million dollars in New York - the highest ever for a British work of art, the auction house Christie's said Friday.
The Venetian painting "Giudecca, La Donna della Salute and San Giorgio" from 1841 broke the previous record held by John Constables' "The Lock", which sold for 21 million dollars in 1990.
Turner's painting also sold at the highest price ever at Christie's for an important old master painting, only one day after Christie's announced the sale of German master Lucas Cranach the Elder's painting of St. Barbara for 5 million dollars - at that point the second highest price ever for an old master painting.
