The illegal immigration debate in this nation, including in our Utah community, clearly is heating up, and as it does, KSL hopes it can proceed with civility.
Unfortunately, harsh, strident voices are already being heard. Many among us seem more inclined toward rancor and enmity than in seeking understanding in the search for workable solutions to extremely complex issues.
Indeed, this is a debate that has the potential to be as divisive as any in this nation's recent history, but only if the people of America allow it to happen.
It is why KSL urges all in the community to strive more earnestly to respect each other's opinions. In a quest for understanding, be more disposed to listening rather than braying about this view or that. Be sensitive to one another's cultural, ethnic and racial backgrounds, and avoid the tendency to stereotype. Care must be taken to prevent blatant bigotry from raising its ugly head.
KSL believes solutions to the immigration dilemma can be found, but not on the fringes of the debate where views are entrenched and vindictive attitudes seem to prevail. Surely, somewhere closer to the center is an answer to the immigration challenges facing our nation and our state! That answer will be found much easier if the debate can go forward with civility.
