This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Utah is one of the fastest growing states in the nation. We've had positive increases every year since 1990, and in 2011, our population hit almost 3 million. With such a rapidly expanding population, it makes sense to have an agency looking out for people in all Utah's 29 counties. That's exactly what the Utah Association of Counties is doing.

Executive director Brent Gardner says this organization is designed to represent the interests of each county to make sure their concerns are heard by state government officials. This often means Utah Association of Counties presents the issues at both the local and state level and works to secure funds for state-run programs. Because they're so involved with securing funds, the Utah Association of Counties often becomes the deliverer of state services.

This group is committed not only to keeping a balanced budget but also looks to the future with current demands to stay in budget. They also provide specialized training for their members based on trends, problems and current issues. Twice a year, in April and November, they hold statewide meetings.

The Executive Director said it's the spirit of cooperation that's an essential characteristic of our Utah culture and why Utah Association of Counties was established in 1924. It was the first county organization in the Western United States. And because this model worked so well for Utah, it became the basis for the National Association of Counties.

Brent is the fourth CEO of the organization. He's been involved for almost 40 years now. Two of their elected officials have moved up in state leadership positions: Frank Moss later became a senator and Gary Herbert left the organization to become Utah's lieutenant governor and of course he's now our governor.

The Utah Association of Counties is focused on getting the job done efficiently and effectively. Their measurement of success to them means Utah's growing population and 29 counties are well taken care of.
