Italian opera star Luciano Pavarotti has posponed concerts in Portugal and seven other European and Latin American countries because of a painful back, his manager said Thursday.
The legendary 70-year-old tenor, who is on a "farewell celebration tour", will resume his schedule of worldwide performances in Canada on June 3, manager Terri Robinson said in a statement.
"The tenor is currently in New York undergoing treatment for a painful condition in his lower back," she said.
"Specialists have advised him not to travel or perform until they have completed this treatment, which will be at the end of May," she added.
The postponement affect concerts in Austria, Brazil, Bosnia, Chile, Finland, Switzerland and Norway as well as Portugal, the statement said.
The concert Pavarotti had been set to give in Lisbon on April 21 has been rescheduled for September 29, the SPE entertainment agency which was organizing the show in Portugal said in a separate statement.
No new dates for the other postponed concerts was given.
Pavarotti began singing in a church choir as child and went on to become one of the world's most successful classical music artists.
