OverviewIn this special Sunday Edition: A Year in Review. We'll take a look back at the stories that shaped 2011. Plus, we will look to the future and the 2012 Presidential elections with our political team.

Segment 1

One of the biggest stories of 20-11 began almost a decade ago-- in the summer of 2002. A 14-year-old girl was abducted from her bedroom and a massive manhunt began for Elizabeth Smart. Justice for her finally came in May this past year, when a judge sentenced her kidnapper to life in federal prison. News Specialist Sandra Yi takes a look back at sentencing day for Brian David Mitchell.

Two years have passed since Susan Powell disappeared. And this second year brought more interest in the case across the country than did the first. News Specialist Jennifer Stagg has followed this story since Powell vanished and reviews the case as it played out in 2011.

One of the thorniest problems of 2011 was the issue of immigrants -- illegal or undocumented -- and what to do about them. In 2010, Utah opinion leaders forged a compromise approach known as the Utah Compact. In 2011, lawmakers and the Governor produced legislation based on the compact. The basic approach was tougher enforcement, but coupled with a guest worker program and other features to give non-citizens a chance to earn a living. But controversy was immediate. A petition drive was organized to repeal parts of it. And many contended the law usurped federal authority. Late in the year, the U.S. Department of Justice filed suit to overturn the legislation, leaving its future uncertain.

Several communities across Utah are still recovering from severe weather events in 20-11. Floods and windstorms left people with damaged homes, and torn up yards. News Specialist Mike Anderson reviews Utah's year in weather.

Segment 2

Education is always an issue in Utah, with our young, growing population producing many new students..... and with the state's limited resources. 20-11 brought both progress and challenges. Education Specialist Nadine Wimmer looks back at the year for schools and students.

JimmerMania, a response to horse herpes, and several rescues put Utah in the national spotlight in 2011. News Specialist Alex Cabrero reviews some of the most memorable stories and images of the year.

Segment 3

On the political scene, 20-11 was very much a year spent previewing the big election year ahead. Two men with Utah ties remain in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. They face a big week ahead. The Iowa caucuses are Tuesday. Our political team will be in Iowa when the votes are tallied and they joined Bruce Lindsay with a preview.
