LOGAN, Utah - Utah State senior wide receiver/returner Kevin Robinson was named the Western Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office.
Robinson, a native of Fresno, Calif. (Hoover HS), had a total of 223 return yards (an average of 37.2 yards per return) in Saturday's 23-20 loss to San Jose State. He had 144 kick return yards on three attempts, including an 82-yarder for a touchdown early in the second quarter to get the Aggies on the board. He also returned three punts for 79 yards, including a season-long of 53.
Robinson now leads the WAC and ranks tied for ninth in the NCAA in all-purpose yards with 196.8 per game.
Robinson's return for a TD was his first kick return since 2004, his freshman season when he had a 94-yard return for a TD vs. Louisiana-Monroe.
His two kick returns for TD in his career ties USU's school record for kick returns for touchdowns, tying Tony Pennyman (2003-06) and Altie Taylor (1966-68).
Robinson also is tied for the record of three punt returns for a TD with John Strycula (1969-71) and Bob Wicks (1969-71). The five return TD's (three punt returns and two kick returns) is the most total returns in school history.
The kick return for a TD was Robinson's 23rd TD of his career, moving him to sole possession of No. 7 on USU's career TD list. Robinson's return for a score was his second in as many home games vs. SJSU, as he had an 87-yard punt return in the match-up on Oct. 8, 2005, which resulted in a 21-14 USU victory.
Robinson's honor is his first since getting the same award in 2005 also for his performance against San Jose State, when he returned six punts for 105 yards including the previously mentioned 87-yarder for a TD.
This is the first WAC award for Utah State since defensive end Ben Calderwood garnered the Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 9 of last season.
San Jose State quarterback Adam Tafralis and safety Jonathan Harris were named the WAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.
