NEW YORK, Apr 3, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- New York author Julie Powell has won the first Blooker Prize, an international competition for books that started as weblogs.

Powell's "Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen," took the $2,000 top prize awarded by the print-on-demand publisher Lulu.com Sunday night, the Telegraph reported.

The project began when a bored Powell decided to try whipping up all 524 recipes from the classic 1961 American cookbook, "Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking," in 365 days.

She reported her cooking trials on her daily blog, which was described by the newspaper as "Nigella Lawson meets Bridget Jones."

Book publisher Little Brown put the "blog" to paper and it quickly sold 100,000 copies and was just recently published in Britain.

With talks under way in Hollywood to adapt Powell's work for the big screen, she told the Telegraph she would like to Kate Winslet portray her in the film.

"She can curse right and she looks as though she's eaten French food before," Powell said.
