BYU beats Dixie State 96-85

PROVO -- Brock Zylstra scored a team-high 23 points and Brandon Davies muscled inside for 20 points as the BYU Cougars held on for a 96-85 win over Dixie State.

Noah Hartsock added a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Stephen Rogers scored 19 points off the bench.

BYU shot 47 free throws, tying a Marriott Center record, and made 39 (83 percent), a new Marriott Center record, however neither is official because they were accomplished in an exhibition game.

Griffon Jones scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Rebels and Maurice Cole scored 13 points and had a game- high 10 assists for Dixie State.

Dixie State jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead and the Cougars spent the first half battling back. They tied the score at 33 with 2:43 left and led by six at the half.

The two teams battled back in forth in the second half. Between the 7:54 and 4:04 marks there were 11 lead changes and neither team took a lead of more than two during that streak.

BYU finished the game on a 15-7 run, winning by 11, the closest exhibition victory for the Cougars since their narrow win over the EA Sports All-Stars 75-72 in the 2003-04 season.

The Cougars will open the regular season in Logan against in-state rival Utah State on Friday, November 11 at 7 p.m.
