Former Wimbledon champion Lindsay Davenport, the world No. 5, has pulled out of this week's 3.45 million dollars (2.83 million euros) Miami Open because of an ongoing back injury, according to organisers.
Davenport, who is also a former world No. 1, complained of a back problem after her defeat to another former No. 1, Martina Hingis at the Indian Wells Open last week.
"I was hoping to have recovered in time but unfortunately I am not yet ready to play at the top of my game," said the American, a finallist in 2000.
Davenport lamented last week that a bulging disc in her lower back could cost her the entire clay court season.
American compatriot Serena Williams also withdrew from the tournament with injury.
The Miami Open, which also includes a men's ATP Masters Series event, begins on Wednesday.
