SALT LAKE CITY - The cold, sloppy weather was a factor in several games in week eight of Prep football, and so were the defenses. Two teams held their opponents scoreless while another only gave up six points. The number one teams in 4A and 1A showed why they are number one and flexed their muscles to prove it.
No. 1 Logan 34 vs. Mountain Crest 6
Everyone has heard of DJ Nelson by now and how good the Logan offense is, but on Friday night it was the Grizzly defense that won the game. The Mountain Crest Mustangs wanted a little revenge for last season's loss to the Grizzlies but unfortunately for the Mustangs they could not move the ball. Logan's defense kept the Mustangs to a total of 184 yards and only 46 of those were on the ground. To top that all off the Mustangs were picked off three times, twice by Johnny Luke and once by Tyler Compton. Nelson and the rest of the offense did their part as well; Nelson rushed for 3 TDs and passed for another.
Bountiful 0 vs. No. 2 East 27
As the Utes and Cougars have found out this year, when you turn the ball over you are bound to lose the game and unfortunately for the Bountiful Braves they found this out the hard way. The East Leopards paid the Braves back for last year's blowout and paid it back in spades. The Leopards forced 5 Brave turn overs and scored on two of them; the first a fumble recovery by Chase Barney who ran 84 yards for the score and the second was an interception by Sione Leaaetoa who returned it five yards for the TD. The win also ended the Braves win streak against the Leopards at eight games.
Cottonwood 35 vs. No. 4 Jordan 49
If you like high scoring games than this was the game for you - no defense required. Jordan's defense had not given up 28 points to a team all year long but Cottonwood had that many by the end of the 3rd quarter, and the teams were tied. Luckily for the Beetdiggers they have a Freshman QB named Austin Kafentzis who rushed for 4 TDs and 275 yards and Austin Grant rushed for three scores as well. The Mustangs could only get one more TD in the fourth quarter, a 31 yard pass from Cooper Bateman to Inoke Lotueluei. Bateman had two other passing TDs as well as one on the ground.
West 19 vs. Viewmont 27
Viewmont is new to Region 2 but that does not seem to bother the Vikings because they are now in first place. The Vikings defense was able to hold off the Panthers' fourth quarter comeback to pull out the win during Homecoming. Viking running back Braden Walters had 103 rushing yards on just eight carries and he also had a 58 yard touchdown, his third of the night, to give Viewmont the lead for good with just 3:47 remaining in the game. Panther WR Taurus Dickerson caught two Alex Espinosa passes for TDs in the fourth quarter but it was not enough for the win.
No. 3 Rich 0 vs. No. 1 Duchesne
The three previous meetings between the Rich Rebels and the Duchesne Eagles came down to overtime but not this year. The Eagles soared to an easy win and are the clear favorites in 1A. Eagles' running back Braden Despain ran for three touchdowns in the first half, his long TD of 65 yards. Despain rushed for a total of 160 yards while teammate QB Allen Shiaba on attempted 7 passes but he connected on four of them, two of which were for TDs. 35 of Duchesne's 42 points all came in the first half of play.
