A correspondent for South Korea's public broadcaster KBS was kidnapped on Tuesday in Gaza by Palestinian gunmen, the foreign ministry in Seoul confirmed.
"The Palestine government and the Israeli authorities promised to make all-out efforts for his safe release," South Korean consular official Kim Jae-hui said, confirming the identity of the man as 41-year-old Yong Tae-young.
Yong, based in Dubai, had travelled to the Gaza Strip to cover the militant Islamic group Hamas following its election to lead a new Palestinian government on January 25, South Korea's official Yonhap news agency reported.
The reporter was staying at a hotel in the northern beach area of the Gaza Strip along with his cameraman when armed Palestinians raided the hotel on Tuesday and kidnapped several foreigners, a foreign ministry statement said.
The KBS cameraman, who was not captured, later informed the South Korean embassy in Israel of the incident, the statement added.
