LONDON, Mar 12, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Fourteen percent of British men bought more than $3,450 online last year, but only 5 percent of women spend that much online, a survey finds.

Women see shopping as more of a social experience and like to see what they are buying, according to Cynthia McVey, a psychologist at Glasgow Caledonia University.

"Stereotypes are true -- many men don't like shopping on the high street. If they need something they will go online, have a look at it, assume it will be OK and buy it," McVey told the Sunday Telegraph.

"A woman, however, will 'want to feel the fabric. For them, shopping is often more of a social event. They like to go with their friends, get advice from them before buying and catch up over lunch."

The survey, conducted by Affinity Planet, asked more than 3,000 British adults about buying goods online. It found 36 percent of women but 20 percent of men said it was vital to have heard of a retailer or brand before buying online.
