NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., Mar 7, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The largest publicly financed all-women's college in the United States may be merged into a unified Rutgers University, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
Rutgers President Richard McCormick was poised to support the controversial plan that would merge the all-women's Douglass College with four other undergraduate schools -- Cook, Livingston, Rutgers and University.
Supporters of the plan under consideration since last summer said the merger would reduce costs since each college now has its own administration.
Critics, including the New Jersey Assembly, argued it would undermine Douglass' tradition.
"It would be a disgrace," Assemblywoman Linda Stender, D-Scotch Plains, told the newspaper.
"We've made some wonderful strides the last 15 years, but ask most women and they'll say that the glass ceiling is still there. It's just harder to see," Stender said.
McCormick is expected to formally recommend the reorganization Friday to Rutgers' board of governors, the newspaper reported.
