LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- Nate Harris scored 19 points and Chaz Spicer added 14 to lead Utah State to a 61-58 win over San Jose State Saturday night.
Cass Matheus dropped in four free throws in the final 1:17 to tie the game and push Utah St. to the win. San Jose St. had a chance to tie or win with nine seconds remaining, but three 3-point shots all went awry for the Spartans.
The Aggies end the regular season with a 21-7 record, 11-5 in the Western Athletic Conference.
San Jose St.(6-24, 2-14) was led in scoring by Alex Elam with 19 points and Carlton Spencer with 17.
USU led by as many as nine points early in the second half, but three consecutive 3-point shots by Spencer with 11:45 remaining gave San Jose a 48-45 lead, which they held until the final 1:17.
With the win, USU secures the No. 2 seed in the WAC Tournament, which begins Thursday.
San Jose St. ran out to a 10-3 lead in the first half and led until 5:37 left in the half. Durrall Peterson tied the game with a 3-point shot and Spicer, a reserve forward, then hit two consecutive field goals and two free throws to help give USU a 36-29 halftime edge.
Spicer scored all of his 14 points in the first half, while Alex Elam hit three of his four 3-point shots to lead the Spartans at halftime. In the game, San Jose hit nine 3-point shots, tying a season high.
