Brad Pitt will produce and possibly star in a film of Mary Doria Russell's science-fiction novel "The Sparrow", about a Jesuit priest visiting an alien culture on another planet, Variety reported Friday.
Warner Brothers has bought the film rights to the book from Universal, putting production in the hands of Pitt's Plan B and Industry Entertainment.
The film's producers are Pitt, Industry Entertainment's Nick Wechsler and Brillstein-Grey's Cynthia Pett-Dante, Pitt's manager.
"The Sparrow", Russell's much-lauded 1996 literary debut, depicts the 21st century journey by a Jesuit priest and a crew of space travellers to a distant planet to engage its alien culture.
Their visit, however, sparks a bloody war between different races on the planet and tests the priest's faith.
Pitt, 42, created Plan B together with his then-wife actress Jennifer Aniston, who gave up her ownership in the company after their 2005 divorce.
