PROVO — BYU safety Daniel Sorensen’s comment about “a bunch of white boys” recently created rumblings and debate throughout sports radio and online messages boards. Here are the top five quotes associated with BYU football.

But first, the honorable mentions:

  • Daniel Sorensen commented about the possibility of “a bunch of white boys out there who go down and, you know, beat up an SEC team.” The Cougars made that a reality in its season-opener.
  • Many have forgotten when John Beck shed some tears after a loss back in 2003, saying it would "probably ruin my weekend."
  • As a freshman, Austin Collie said that the 5-5 Cougars were “going to put a hurt on them (Utah, 11-0),” before the 2004 rivalry game.
  • Bronco Mendenhall was named head coach in 2005. When he was introduced to the press, Mendenhall pulled out his scriptures and quoted the Title of Liberty from The Book of Mormon.
  • Lee Corso said, “This place is almost as nice as Provo,” on College Game Day before picking TCU to beat the Utes in 2010. And the top five:5. “All those guys think that’s all there is to life. But when I’m making $50–60,000 a year, they’ll be pumping my gas. They’re low-class losers,” former BYU nose guard Lenny Gomes said after Utah won the 1993 rivalry game 34-31 on a last second field goal in Provo.

4. "I'd rather lose and live in Provo than win and live in Laramie," LaVell Edwards said after suffering a 33-20 loss in 1981 to Wyoming in a snowstorm in Laramie.

3. "I don't like Utah. In fact, I hate them. I hate everything about them. I hate their program, their fans. I hate everything," Max Hall said in 2009 after throwing a game-winning touchdown pass to Andrew George to best the Utes in OT.

2. "I wouldn't say it was lucky. We executed the play well. We should have had another one (TD). Obviously, if you do what's right on and off the field, I think the Lord steps in and plays a part in it. Magic happens," Austin Collie said about his fourth and 18 completion that set up Harvey Unga’s game-winning touchdown run in 2008.

And the top quote:

  1. "How can you rank BYU No. 1? Who'd they play -- Bo Diddley Tech?" then Today host Bryant Gumbel said in November 1984, just a few months before BYU was named national champions.
