Legendary Spanish tenor Placido Domingo has extended his tenure as general director of the Los Angeles Opera until 2011, officials said Wednesday.
Domingo, 65, joined the US West Coast city's opera company in 1986 and was named general director in 2003.
"Placido Domingo's decision to renew his contract as general director comes at a time when LA Opera has emerged from several years of considerable expansion with sound finances," said the opera's chairman Marc Stern.
"By signing a five-year contract, Placido has confirmed his long-term commitment to the company," Stern added.
Domingo is a renowned singer and conductor, having sung more than 122 roles -- more than any other tenor in history -- and has earned nine Grammy Awards and two Latin Grammies during his long career.
"I must say how delighted I am to continue as general director of LA Opera for many years to come," Domingo said. "It is my dream to make LA Opera a more integral part of life in our city."
