Talk about destination dining. The New Yorker in Salt Lake City has been "the" place to dine since it first opened in 1978. It has consistently been rated as Utah's most popular dining establishment.

You probably know it best as the place to go for special events, anniversaries or birthdays. They have a well-deserved reputation for service, especially since they're also known for the longevity of their servers. Many of them have been with the company for 20 years or longer. This is a great example of job sustainability, one of the major factors in helping Utah's economy lead out in the nation. It's also critical for our economic recovery.

The glue behind this operation is chef Will Pliler (ply-ler). Just so you understand the dedication he brings to his position, he travels constantly, both domestically and internationally, looking for new menu ideas or dishes he can put his own twist on. He's very much in tune with using fresh local ingredients. This is one of the reasons the New Yorker's menu changes seasonally, based on what's most delicious at the time.

The New Yorker is a great supporter of the arts. For years they've provided dining credits to the Utah Symphony, Ballet West and the Utah Opera. They were one of the first venues downtown to offer a shuttle to art events. But they also believe in giving back to the community and will support important events and activities.

Over the years they've served a wide variety of celebrities and during the Olympics they were the place for the movers and shakers. You never knew who you'd see when you walked in, from the king of Norway to the head of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. One time the renowned opera singer Luciano Pavarotti came in following a performance in Salt Lake. As he waltzed through the dining room to reach his private room in the back, all the guests applauded him. He bowed his head to acknowledge them.

The New Yorker is a great example of Downtown Rising.
