TOKYO, Feb 20, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Japanese scientists propose adding habitual abortion to treatments in which preimplantation genetic diagnosis is allowed during in vitro fertilization.
Habitual abortion, or recurrent pregnancy loss, involves three or more miscarriages without intervening successful pregnancies.
The decision will be controversial, with opponents claiming it is a eugenic technology that may lead to human selection, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported Monday. The diagnostic technique examines whether eggs fertilized in vitro harbor genetic diseases or other abnormalities.
A final decision is expected during the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology's general meeting in April, the newspaper said.
