(KSL News) -- New studies show parents are not properly using booster seats for their children.

Less than one in five children ages four to eight use booster seats. Children who do buckle up are often in the wrong type of seat, seats that aren't properly installed, or even in the front seat with no restraint at all.

Properly buckling up can your child's life. Just ask Jennifer Hardy of Alphareta, Georgia. Her five-year old was in a booster seat and survived when an SUV shaved off the left side of their van.

Jennifer Hardy: "It was because of that little $20 or $30 investment to have that seatbelt fitting her correctly that she was able to survive that crash."
