NORMAN, Okla., Jan 30, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History in Norman has received a $100,000 federal grant to preserve Kiowa ledger-book drawings.
The fragile drawings by Kiowa artist Silver Horn will be copied and preserved so scholars can study them in the future, conservator Victoria Book told The Oklahoman.
Book said the ledger paper dating back to the 1800s is so fragile the pages can't be studied without causing further damage.
Silver Horn's calendar drawings chronicle major Kiowa events from 1828 to 1929.
"We think he began making these ledger drawings in 1906 and recounted events from previous years while also adding to it," Book said.
The only other known Silver Horn ledger is in the Smithsonian's National Anthropological Archives.
