Berlin (dpa) - Daniel Barenboim, 63, conductor of the Berlin State Opera Orchestra, remained in a clinic Saturday in the German capital, a day after he was rushed to hospital half an hour before a Mozart 250th anniversary gala concert.

A spokesman for the Unter den Linden opera house said Barenboim had suddenly felt weak and would remain in hospital, but the doctor's diagnosis, not made public, did not suggest his life was in danger. He was under observation and was "much, much better" Saturday.

The concert, which was telecast or radiocast live to 23 nations to help kick off this year's celebrations of the 1756 birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, went ahead with assistant Julien Salemkour conducting.

The audience was shocked as the head of the State Opera, Peter Mussbach, announced Barenboim's illness.

The previous evening he had conducted the Staatskapelle Berlin orchestra performing works by Mozart and himself played the piano in the premiere of a piece by US composer Eliott Carter at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall.

Arts channels aired the concert as part of an event dubbed "24 Hours Mozart."
