This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
We Americans love pizza. We eat around 350 slices of pizza each second, or 100 acres per day. Children ages 3 to 11 prefer pizza for lunch and dinner above any other food. With 94 percent of the population who eats pizza, this is probably why it's a $30 billion industry in the U.S.
Despite the popularity of pizza, sit-down pizzerias are becoming harder to find. So, if you find a pizza parlor you love, generally you stick with it. At least that's been the case with Rock Creek Pizza at 1300 W. 12600 South in Riverton.
This is an independent pizzeria that offers a wide selection of traditional and original pizzas. It's the only dine-in pizzeria and the only place with a pizza buffet and salad bar in the southwest part of the valley. Only a few years ago Pizza Today magazine honored Rock Creek Pizza as one of the Utah's top two pizzerias.
Owner John Williams understands the importance of today's eating out dollars and has changed his business model to help him thrive. He views everybody as potential competition. This makes him even more determined to provide a consistent high-quality product and excellent service every time someone visits Rock Creek Pizza.
Employees are trained to say yes to customers' requests and to exceed expectations. He believes in treating his employees well, and this is reflected in his low turnover rates. It's not unusual for his teenage employees to stay with the company for two or three years — a rarity for that age group.
He believes in supporting the Riverton community and walks his talk by supporting everyone from local church organizations to the Boy Scouts. Pretty much any youth sport you can think of, John says Rock Creek Pizza has sponsored.
One of his favorite success stories came from a chance meeting in the doctor's office with a man from California. When he found out John owned Rock Creek Pizza, he said, "That's my sister's favorite restaurant!"
