WASHINGTON, Jan 26, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The number of U.S. businesses owned by women increased 20 percent, about twice the national average for all companies, the U.S. Census Bureau said.

Census figures from 2002 data released Thursday said woman owned some 6.5 million business in the United States and the companies generated more than $940 billion in revenue.

The bureau said the number of women-owned business increased about 20 percent from 1997 through 2002. Overall in the United States the number of business grew by about 10 percent.

More than 117,000 of women-owned companies had receipts of at least $1 million.

The Census Bureau said that about 33 percent of women-owned businesses were in healthcare and social assistance or other services, such as personal service, repair or maintenance.

The Census Bureau defines women-owned businesses as privately held firms in which women own 51 percent or more of interest or stock in the business.
