MELBOURNE, Jan 25, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Australian actress Nicole Kidman says she was "deeply moved" by the Order of Australia award given to her by her government.
Kidman, 38, was made a companion in the general division of the Order of Australia, the Melbourne Herald-Sun reported Wednesday.
"I am deeply moved that I have been chosen to receive this prestigious award," Kidman said. "It is an honor beyond any of my expectations and I thank Australia for giving it to me."
Kidman did not receive the award in person because she is in the United States where she was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the U.N. Fund for Women.
"They asked me if I would accept and I felt slightly embarrassed," Kidman said of the U.N. honor.
She said she plans to draw attention to sexism, violence and disease in places like Somalia and Afghanistan, the newspaper said.
