SANTIAGO, Chile, Jan 23, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The wife of former Chilean strongman Augusto Pinochet was arrested Monday on tax evasion charges, El Mercurio reported online.
Lucia Hiriart was apprehended by authorities as part of a larger investigation into foreign bank accounts belonging to Pinochet.
The 90-year-old ex-dictator has been accused of stealing millions from Chilean coffers during his 17-year regime (1973-90).
Along with Hiriart, four of the couple's five children were also held in the case.
Pinochet also face charges for numerous alleged human rights violations. Some 3,000 people disappeared during his rule.
