SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) -- A last-second tip-in gave Centenary a 67-to-65 win over Southern Utah tonight, snapping the Gents' eight-game losing streak. Southern Utah had point-two seconds on the clock to try to score -- and did -- but N-C-A-A rules say that's not enough time to catch, possess and attempt a shot.
Teams can only try to tip in a pass in the vicinity of the rim, so the basket was waived off.
Centenary held a comfortable double-digit lead the entire night, but Southern Utah got its first lead of the half on three-pointer by Henry Uhegwu with one minute and 42 seconds left.
Southern Utah's 12-oh run ended when Larry Logan found Xavier Burnette underneath for an easy bucket for Centenary. After several possession in which both teams failed to score, Centenary took control of the ball after forcing a shot clock violation with 37 seconds left.
Burnette forced up a fade away from the baseline and the buzzer from the shot clock sounded as the ball was in mid-air. Alexander Starr followed the shot and was there to tip the miss through the net as time expired.
