(KSL News) -- E-mails are circulating across the country warning cell phone users their cell phone will be jammed with unsolicited phone calls if they don't register on the "Do Not Call Website"... but is that really true?
The messages say a cell phone 411 directory is being created.
That's true, but customers must choose to be a part of that database, and at this point there are no plans to sell that information to marketers.
The e-mail also tells you to register on the do not call website immediately. One reads: "31 days from today, cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies. “
That's false.
Gene Endicott, The Wireless Association: "No, there is no deadline to register your cell phone for the do not call list if that's what you prefer to do."
But if you are not registered you're vulnerable.
Right now, cell phones are protected from automated marketing calls, but if there is a live person on the other end of an unsolicited call, your minutes will be used.
