NEW YORK, Jan 10, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera" has surpassed his other hit "Cats," to become the longest running show in Broadway history.

Broadway royalty packed the Majestic Theater as the chandelier crashed for 7,486th time Monday night, The New York Times reported.

Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh took the stage following the performance for a symbolic passing of a baton from a woman dressed as a cat.

"Phantom" has raked in almost $600 million from 11 million seats sold on Broadway and its road and international productions combine for more than $3.2 billion, the Times said.

Following the post-show celebration, the festivities continued with a black-tie, masked ball at the Waldorf-Astoria.

Shubert Organization President Philip J. Smith, which owns the Majestic, told the Times there is no end in sight for "Phantom's" run.

"It's got years to go," he said.
