The 20th aniversary of the murder of gorilla conservationist Dian Fossey is being commemorated in Rwanda. The US researcher, upon whom the Hollywood movie Gorillas In The Mist was based, spent twenty years watching the nation's rare mountain gorillas. Government officials made speeches and laid wreaths on Fossey's grave, while local residents performed traditional dances in her honour. Fossey's assassin has never been brought to justice, she was killed in her jungle cabin in 1985. Director-general of Rwanda's Parks and Tourism board says, "Fossey brought the plight of mountain gorillas to the attention of the world. She was dedicated to the conservation of gorillas and their habitats in Rwanda and Africa at large through anti-poaching, regular monitoring, research and education. (JB/WNWCCB/SC)
