ALBANY, N.Y., Dec 11, 2005 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Westchester County District Attorney Jeanine Pirro, a Republican, is expected to quit her bid to challenge U.S, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y.
The move may come as soon as Monday when GOP leaders meet in Albany, N.Y., to prepare for the 2006 elections -- featuring races for governor, state attorney general, Congress and all state legislative seats, sources told the New York Daily News.
Pirro's campaign said the candidate has no plans to drop out of the race, but sources said she may be "drafted" to run for state attorney general.
Pirro has some name recognition statewide, but her poll numbers have remained about 30 points behind Clinton.
"She's been hurt by a lack of money and a campaign that from the beginning has been sputtering at best," said Marist College pollster Lee Miringoff.
Pirro made the central issue of her campaign that Clinton wants to run for president and won't finish a second term. Even if true, Miringoff said the issue did not resonate with New Yorkers.
