PROVO -- Each year BYU loses players serving a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One such player is BYU wide receiver Brett Thompson who is currently serving in Louisville, Kentucky.

BYU Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall shared an e-mail from Elder Thompson, saying that there were many things in the letter that were not really miraculous, but special.

"From the common day-to-day experience that most of us have," Mendenhall said, "it's easy to glance over things and say it's a coincidence, or say that it's just random, but when the kids are on their missions, they start looking deeper than that."

Often, the missionary is humble and teachable, which makes it easier to serve others.

"Brett's thriving," Mendenhall said. "He's being called on to serve and help others, to lead and teach missionaries."

Elder Thompson has one year left as a missionary before he returns to play BYU football.
